HERMES ROD / MERCURY ROD
In Greek mythology, Hermes was depicted as carrying a kerykeion in his hand. Similarly, in Roman mythology, Mercurius was depicted carrying a kerykeion in his hand. In Greek mythology, Iris, the goddess of the dawn, also carried a kerykeion. Iris was the messenger of the gods and the sun.
SYMBOL OF TRADE AND ECONOMY
In modern pictorial symbolism, the caduceus is a symbol of trade and economy. In the United States, it is also sometimes confused with the symbol of medicine, the staff of Asclepius. However, they are two different symbols used in different contexts. The rod also appears in a simpler form in ancient art, where snakes are not depicted at all.
