Black Friday's roots go back to the mid-20th century in Philadelphia, USA, where the rush hour on the Friday after Thanksgiving began to be called Black Friday. Later, the term was extended to accounting, where the colour was used to refer to the books: early year losses were recorded in red, while Christmas sales turned the year into a profit and the colour changed to black. The Friday after Thanksgiving thus became the annual financial turning point.

Black Friday was originally an event for brick-and-mortar stores, but as it has expanded, it has spread to online stores. Don't forget Cyber Monday, the online retailers' own event immediately after Black Friday.
